David’s reign gives us a picture of what a just and righteous king looks like. In 2 Samuel 8, David administers justice and righteousness to all his people. In 2 Samuel 9, we see another characteristic of his kingship: kindness. David keeps his covenant promise to Jonathan by seeking out Mephibosheth and showing him unexpected kindness, restoring his land and giving him a permanent place at the king’s table.
These chapters point us to Jesus, the greater King. Unlike earthly rulers, Jesus is perfectly just and righteous, and He is also extraordinarily kind to undeserving sinners. Through Christ, those who have rebelled against the King are shown mercy, saved by grace, and welcomed into God’s family. As those who have received the kindness of Jesus, we are called to reflect that kindness to those around us—even those who offend us or whom we believe do not deserve it.
